[Junior High School Baseball Club] Honing Skills and Hearts – Completion of 3-Day International Baseball Exchange with Rookies

[Junior High School Baseball Club] Exchange Program with American Team – Day 3

On Sunday, August 3, the final day of the international exchange program, the morning was spent touring a baseball glove workshop, followed by a friendly inter-squad game and farewell ceremony at the Ritsumeikan Uji grounds in the afternoon.

Throughout the three days, students formed friendships and gained invaluable learning experiences that will surely remain in their hearts.

Learning the Craft and Spirit Behind the Glove – Visit to a Glove Workshop

In the morning, the Rookies players visited Kiyokawa Seishoten, a glove manufacturing workshop located in Miyake Town, Nara Prefecture, accompanied by 13 of our students.

Miyake Town was once responsible for 90% of Japan’s baseball glove production. The region’s industry, dating back to 1921, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021. Kiyokawa Seishoten, a major contributor since its founding in 1952, supplies OEM products to major brands and also manufactures its own brand, bro’s. Known for its high-quality craftsmanship and small-batch production, the factory is a legacy of Japanese baseball culture.

During the visit, students observed the leather and stitching process up close and even experienced turning a finished glove inside out. Many were astonished by the care and precision involved in crafting a single piece of equipment. The students gained a deeper appreciation for their gear—not just as tools, but as products of passion and expertise. This encounter shifted how they view baseball itself and can be considered a WOW-style program for the baseball team.

Above all, they discovered that baseball is more than just a sport—it is a “culture” that connects players, craftsmen, and local communities alike.

All-Out Play and Big Smiles in the Final Inter-Squad Game

In the afternoon, the final exchange activities took place on the school field.

The event began with a demonstration of warm-ups and throwing drills that Ritsumeikan Uji players normally perform. The Rookies joined in and participated seriously, even with unfamiliar movements like bridges proving to be a challenge.

Afterward, all players were evenly split into two teams for a special-rules scrimmage game. Cheers erupted for great plays, while humorous American-style teasing met errors, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere that transcended age and nationality.

Farewell Ceremony and a Promise: “See You Next Year”

After the game, a heartfelt farewell ceremony was held. In speeches delivered by student representatives, they expressed their gratitude and reflected on the memories made over the three days.

Among the words shared was a spontaneous promise: “Let’s meet again on this same field next year.”

The day ended with high-fives and warm hugs. The friendships and trust built over these three days reached beyond what words can express.
