Victory at the Kyoto High School Cultural Festival! Qualified for the National Shogi Rookie Tournament!

The 42nd Kyoto Prefectural High School Comprehensive Cultural Festival Shogi Division was held on Sunday, October 26, at Kyoto Prefectural Jonan Ryoso High School. Our first-year student, Soichiro Kume, participated in the Boys’ A-Class Division (1-dan and above) and won first place. With this result, he has earned a spot in the 34th National High School Cultural Federation Rookie Shogi Tournament, which will be held in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture, from January 29 to 31.

A Series of Intense Matches — From Qualifiers to Victory

In the morning qualifying rounds, Kume lost his first match but finished with a 2-win, 1-loss record, advancing to the finals in 4th place. In the afternoon final tournament, he won the first match and advanced to the semifinals. There, he faced the opponent who had defeated him in the opening round. The semifinal turned into a fierce, back-and-forth battle, but Kume was able to exact revenge and secure victory with a decisive finish. Since the top two finishers qualify for nationals, Kume went into the final match with composure. His confident play, free of pressure, led to a solid victory and the championship title.

【Message from Kume】

This was my third tournament since entering high school. I am filled with gratitude to everyone who has supported me on my way to becoming the Kyoto representative. I'm truly honored to compete in the national tournament to be held in Tendo City, Yamagata—the town known as “Japan’s number one shogi town.” At the National Rookie Tournament, I will give my all, focusing on each and every match. I appreciate your support!
