CAS Ogasawara Chichijima research trip

For nine days from July 11 to 19, first- and second-year students in the IB course visited Chichijima in the Ogasawara Islands as part of the "CAS-International Expedition" initiative. The Ogasawara Islands are one of the most remote islands in Japan, taking a full day by ferry from Tokyo. The islands have a unique natural and cultural background and a special history. This was the second time IB students visited the island, following last year's experience.

The students worked closely with the Ogasawara Marine Center staff helping survey the local beaches for nests, protect turtle eggs, release hatchlings, clean turtle tanks at the marine center and care for the turtles. The students snorkeled the corals and were able to appreciate the importance of this habitat and the fish that rely on it. They also hiked in one of Ogasawara's Forest Ecosystem Protected reserve and learned about the challenges related to the loss of endemic species and the introduction of invasive species as well as about all of the outstanding work of professionals and the local community in trying to preserve the unique ecology of the Ogasawara islands.
