Our Student Wins the 35th Murasaki Shikibu Citizens’ Cultural Award – Youth Prize!

Yuzuki Yamamoto, a third-year student and member of the Literature Club, received the Youth Prize in the 35th Murasaki Shikibu Citizens’ Cultural Award hosted by the City of Uji. At the award ceremony held on November 22, she was honored as a young person excelling in cultural activities. Her passion and talent for creative writing were highly praised.

The award-winning work is the novel "The Request Restaurant Shijima". Set in a mysterious restaurant nestled among city buildings, the story follows a protagonist who recreates dishes from their late mother’s keepsakes. Through this fantastical setting, the protagonist retraces their mother’s emotions and undergoes personal growth. The delicate depiction of emotional development through an element of mystery was particularly well received.

Here is Yamamoto-san’s comment on receiving the award:

I am truly honored to have been selected for the prestigious Murasaki Shikibu Citizens’ Cultural Award – Youth Prize. When I first heard the news, I was more surprised than happy. When I’m writing in front of a screen, I’m simply turning my thoughts, feelings, and uncertainties into words, and it never really feels like those words reach anyone. But receiving this award and knowing that people have read my work has made me rediscover the meaning and joy of writing.

I have loved books since I was a child and started writing in junior high school. I’ve gone through many ups and downs with my stories, and now it finally feels like I’ve taken my first step as a writer. I still have much to learn—my expressions and vocabulary are still immature—but I want to continue writing stories that resonate with people's hearts, all while enjoying the process myself. Thank you very much.

We look forward to seeing her future achievements!
