【International Students】Edventure: Experiencing Spring in Uji — Manpuku-ji Temple Visit and Strawberry Picking

In the March Edventure program, international students visited Manpuku-ji Temple, a National Treasure located in Uji, where they enjoyed a temple visit followed by strawberry picking. Edventure is an off-campus experiential learning program designed for international students at our school, aiming to help them discover the charm of the local area while experiencing Japan’s culture, history, and nature.

Located near Obaku Station, Manpuku-ji Temple is the head temple of the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism, founded by the Zen master Ingen, whose name is also the origin of the word “ingen-mame” (kidney beans) in Japan. Known for its distinctive architecture strongly influenced by Chinese styles, the temple offered students a unique cultural experience. Guided by a resident monk, the students toured the temple grounds while learning about its history and architectural features. They also experienced shakyo (sutra copying), spending quiet moments engaging with traditional Japanese culture.

After visiting the temple, the group headed to a strawberry farm to enjoy strawberry picking, tasting fresh strawberries grown in Uji’s mild climate. It was a joyful experience that allowed the students to savor the sweetness of the season while feeling the arrival of spring.

Through the combination of visiting a historic temple and enjoying seasonal local produce, the Edventure program provided international students with a meaningful day of discovering both Japanese culture and the unique attractions of Uji.
