【Junior High WOW Program】Hokkaido Science Trip – Day 3: Facing Life and Carrying Learning into the Future

On the final day of the Hokkaido science training, students visited Asahiyama Zoo. At this zoo, home to animals representing Hokkaido, students spent a meaningful day learning deeply about animal behavior and the importance of life.

Their first stop was the Hippopotamus House. After being amazed by the sheer size and presence of the hippos, the students were given special access to the backstage area, which is normally closed to the public. Before entering, a zookeeper asked them to “shift their mindset,” reminding them that this space is an essential living environment for the animals. With a sense of seriousness, the students stepped inside.

Inside, some students were surprised by the strong smell, but through firsthand experience, they came to understand that such scents are important for hippos, which have strong territorial instincts. The facilities were carefully designed with the animals’ characteristics in mind, and students learned how zookeepers interact with the animals daily and respond flexibly to various situations.

During the Q&A session, questions such as “What happens if an animal escapes?” were raised. The zookeepers explained the thorough preventive measures and training in place, as well as their determination to respond even at the risk of their own lives if necessary. This discussion gave students a deeper understanding of what it means to work and to take responsibility.

Afterward, students explored the zoo freely. Asahiyama Zoo is well known for its “behavioral exhibits,” which allow visitors to observe animals in ways that highlight their natural behaviors. The zoo also utilizes differences in elevation, enabling visitors to view animals from above and below. Students paid close attention to handwritten explanations by the zookeepers, enjoying and deepening their learning at the same time.

After the visit, the group traveled to Asahikawa Airport, where students enjoyed their final moments in Hokkaido by shopping for souvenirs. They then safely returned to the Kansai region.

Throughout this three-day program, students not only experienced science learning in the rich natural environment of Hokkaido, but also encountered new perspectives, ways of living, and inspiring individuals. These experiences have become invaluable for each student.

We hope that students will cherish what they have learned and the connections they have made, continue to believe in themselves, take on new challenges, and keep growing in their daily lives as they move forward.
