【Junior High WOW Program】Learning from the Frontlines of Life — Visit to the NICU

On March 26, as part of the Junior High WOW Program, students visited the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Kyoto University Hospital.

The visit was guided by Dr. Tomotaki, who had previously delivered a lecture on the theme of “life” to all students in January. During the tour, students carefully observed the NICU facilities, the work of medical staff, and the conditions of hospitalized newborns, showing deep concentration and respect throughout.

After the tour, a discussion session was held with Dr. Tomotaki. Students shared impressions such as being surprised by the warm and supportive atmosphere of the NICU, which differed from the tense image they had initially imagined. A wide range of questions were raised, including inquiries about the NICU, the medical profession, how to stay motivated in studies, and future career paths, making it a highly engaging and meaningful session.

Following the session, at Dr. Tomotaki’s suggestion, the group had lunch at Kyoto University’s student cafeteria. Experiencing the university environment firsthand provided students with a valuable opportunity to reflect on their own future paths while interacting in a new setting.

Through this experience of learning at the frontlines of life, students gained profound insights and a deeper understanding of the value and significance of life.
