　立命館大学グローバル教養学部(GLA)のある大阪いばらきキャンパス(OIC)は、京都駅から24分の茨木駅を降りて徒歩5分、最新の設備が施された立命館大学の第三のキャンパスにあります。私は昨年、情報の授業を担当していたIBコースの生徒が複数GLAに進学したこともあり、近年存在感を増しているGLAの現場を知りたいと思い、OICを訪ねてきました。

GLAとは ── 三つの柱

　GLAには、日本のどこにも無い独自の学びがあります。

　第一に、全授業が英語で行われます。もちろん、入学時にはそれに見合う語学力が求められます。少人数の授業が多く、ディスカッションの機会も多く、意見をぶつけ合うことからクリティカルなものの考え方を鍛えます。学生も海外にルーツを持つ入学者が6割を占めるという特別な環境があります。GLAの授業があるA棟5階のフロアを覗くと、日本的な洗練された空間でありつつ、あちこちから英語が聞こえてきました。ここが普通の日本の大学とは違う空間だということを感じました。

　第二は、リベラル・アーツ教育。哲学、政治学、経済学、データサイエンス、デザインなど、文理にまたがる幅広い学問を横断的に学びます。2023年のカリキュラム改革により、1年次からクリティカル・シンキング、ライティング、リサーチスキルを必修としたうえで、学生が自分の関心に応じて自由に科目を組み合わせられる設計になりました。たとえば、データサイエンスと哲学を同時に学ぶといった履修が可能です。

　第三に、GLAでは、オーストラリア国立大学（ANU）とのデュアル・ディグリー・プログラム。4年間で立命館大学の学士（グローバル教養学）とANUの学士（アジア太平洋学）の二つの学位取得を目指します。在学中に1年間、ANUのキャンベラ校に留学し、ANUの教員が来日し授業を担当します。日本にいながら海外の一流大学の学位を取得できるこの仕組みは、他大学にはない大きな強みです。

ANUでの1年間が学生を変える

　GLAの学生は全員、在学中に1年間ANUに留学します。この体験が学生にもたらす変化について、現場では「人生が変わったと言って過言ではない」という表現が使われていました。

　ANUでの学びは、海外基準の厳しさがあります。授業では膨大な量の文献を読み込むことが求められ、それに基づいて自分の考察を組み立て、レポートにまとめていきます。IBで鍛えられた「読む力・書く力」が、ここで本格的に試されます。

　寮の配置も日本とは発想が異なります。国籍やプログラムの異なる学生を意図的に混ぜて配置し、多様な環境の中で生活します。大変だったけれど行ってよかった、という声が大半だそうです。

　渡航前はまだ将来のことを具体的に考えられない学生も、ANUでの1年を経て、帰国後には見違えるように変わります。勉強だけでなく、サークルや課外活動にも自分から挑戦するようになり、就職活動やその先のキャリアについても主体的に動き始めます。実際に、ANUでの経験をきっかけにオーストラリアで教員免許を取りたいと大学院進学を決めた、立命館宇治出身の卒業生もいます。

IBからGLAへ ── 附属校生の強み

　IB生にとってGLAは相性の良い進学先です。その理由はいくつかあります。

　まず、IBで培った英語力をそのまま活かせます。GLAの全授業が英語であるため、日本語での講義に切り替わるストレスがありません。

　次に、IBで身につけたスタディスキル。エッセイを書く力、文献を批判的に読む力、プレゼンテーションの力。これらはGLAのカリキュラムが最初に求めるクリティカル・シンキング、ライティング、リサーチスキルとそのまま重なります。IBの学びがGLAで直接的なアドバンテージになります。

　そして、「まだ目標が定まりきっていない」という生徒にとって、リベラル・アーツは最適な選択肢です。一つの専門に絞るのではなく、幅広い分野を横断しながら自分の関心を見つけていけます。IBで多様な科目を学んできた生徒の感覚に、そのまま接続する学びの形です。

これからのGLA

　GLAはまだ進化の途上にあります。2027年には次のカリキュラム改革が予定されており、OICに移転してきた情報理工学部や映像学部を含めた他学部との科目連携が視野に入っています。

　とりわけ注目したいのは、情報理工学部にあるISSEコース（Information Systems Science and Engineering Course）の存在です。ISSEは全授業を英語で行い、プロジェクト型の学習を軸に情報工学を学ぶコースで、GLAと同じOICに置かれています。GLAとISSE、英語で学位を取れる二つのプログラムが同じキャンパスに揃っているのは、立命館ならではの強みです。将来的にこの二つが科目連携すれば、リベラル・アーツの思考力とテクノロジーの実装力を掛け合わせた、他大学にはない学びが実現するかもしれません。

　「完全体にはまだなっていない」という現場の率直な言葉からは、まだ伸びしろがあるという前向きなメッセージが伝わってきました。

訪問を終えて

　GLAの現場を訪ねて強く感じたのは、ここが「英語が使える人を育てる場所」ではなく、「英語を使って考える力を鍛える場所」だということです。現場で聞いた「知識を学びに来るというよりも、知識で考えていく」という言葉が、そのことを端的に表していました。

　立命館宇治のIBコースで学んでいる生徒たちにとって、GLAは学びの延長線上にある自然な選択肢だと改めて感じました。附属校という立場を活かして、高校での学びと大学での学びをつなげていけることは、立命館宇治ならではの強みです。

　GLAに関心のある生徒は、ぜひ一度OICに足を運んでみてください。キャンパスの空気を吸うだけで、ここがどんな場所かが伝わるはずです。

　The College of Global Liberal Arts (GLA) at :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0} is located on the Osaka Ibaraki Campus (OIC), the university’s third campus equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. It is a five-minute walk from Ibaraki Station, which is 24 minutes from Kyoto Station. Last year, several students from the IB course for whom I taught Information Studies advanced to GLA. Wanting to better understand this increasingly prominent program, I visited OIC.

What is GLA — Three Pillars

　GLA offers a unique style of learning that cannot be found anywhere else in Japan.

　First, all classes are conducted in English. Naturally, students are required to have an appropriate level of language proficiency upon admission. With many small-sized classes and frequent opportunities for discussion, students develop critical thinking skills by actively exchanging ideas. About 60% of the student body has international roots, creating a distinctive environment. When I looked around the fifth floor of Building A, where GLA classes are held, I heard English spoken throughout a space that was refined yet distinctly international—clearly different from a typical Japanese university setting.

　Second is liberal arts education. Students study across a wide range of disciplines, including philosophy, political science, economics, data science, and design, transcending the boundaries between the humanities and sciences. Following a curriculum reform in 2023, all first-year students are required to take courses in critical thinking, writing, and research skills. Beyond that, the program is designed so that students can freely combine subjects according to their interests—for example, studying data science and philosophy simultaneously.

　Third, GLA offers a dual degree program with the :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1} (ANU). Over four years, students aim to earn two degrees: a Bachelor of Global Liberal Arts from Ritsumeikan University and a Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Studies from ANU. Students spend one year studying at ANU’s Canberra campus, and ANU faculty also come to Japan to teach. This system, which allows students to earn a degree from a world-class overseas university while based in Japan, is a major advantage unique to GLA.

A Year at ANU Transforms Students

　All GLA students study abroad at ANU for one year during their enrollment. Regarding the impact of this experience, staff often describe it as “life-changing.”

　Academic work at ANU meets rigorous international standards. Students are required to read a vast amount of literature, build their own analyses based on it, and compile their ideas into reports. The reading and writing skills cultivated through the IB program are truly put to the test here.

　Even the structure of residential life differs from that in Japan. Students of different nationalities and programs are intentionally mixed, creating a highly diverse living environment. While many say it was challenging, most also say they are glad they went.

　Before departure, some students may not yet have a clear vision of their future. However, after a year at ANU, they return noticeably transformed. Not only in their studies, but they also begin to take initiative in clubs and extracurricular activities, and actively engage in job hunting and future career planning. In fact, one graduate from Ritsumeikan Uji decided to pursue graduate studies in order to obtain a teaching license in Australia after being inspired by their experience at ANU.

From IB to GLA — Strengths of Affiliated School Students

　For IB students, GLA is a highly compatible choice for further study, for several reasons.

　First, they can directly utilize the English proficiency they developed through IB. Since all GLA classes are conducted in English, there is no stress from switching back to Japanese-based instruction.

　Second, the study skills acquired through IB—essay writing, critical reading of texts, and presentation skills—align perfectly with the critical thinking, writing, and research skills emphasized in GLA’s curriculum. What students learn in IB becomes a direct advantage at GLA.

　Furthermore, for students who have not yet fully defined their future goals, a liberal arts education is an ideal option. Rather than narrowing down to a single specialization, they can explore a wide range of fields and discover their interests along the way. This approach naturally connects with the experience of IB students who have studied diverse subjects.

The Future of GLA

　GLA is still evolving. Another curriculum reform is scheduled for 2027, with plans to expand interdisciplinary collaboration with other faculties at OIC, including the College of Information Science and Engineering and the College of Image Arts and Sciences.

　Of particular interest is the ISSE course (Information Systems Science and Engineering Course) within the College of Information Science and Engineering. ISSE also conducts all classes in English and focuses on project-based learning in information engineering, and it is located on the same OIC campus as GLA. Having two English-medium degree programs—GLA and ISSE—on the same campus is a unique strength of Ritsumeikan. If these two programs collaborate in the future, it may lead to a new form of education that combines the analytical thinking of liberal arts with technological implementation skills, something rarely found at other universities.

　The candid remark from those on site that “it is not yet a finished form” conveyed a positive message—that there is still great potential for further growth.

After the Visit

　What struck me most during my visit to GLA was that it is not a place to “learn to use English,” but rather a place to “develop the ability to think in English.” The phrase I heard on site—“students come not just to acquire knowledge, but to think through knowledge”—perfectly captures this idea.

　For students studying in the IB course at Ritsumeikan Uji, GLA is a natural extension of their learning. The ability to connect high school and university education, leveraging the advantages of being an affiliated school, is one of the unique strengths of Ritsumeikan Uji.

　Students interested in GLA are strongly encouraged to visit OIC at least once. Simply experiencing the atmosphere of the campus will give you a clear sense of what kind of place it is.
