Developing International Awareness through Debate and Negotiation: Participating in Osaka MUN
A delegation of students from the IM and IG courses is participating in Osaka MUN, which is being held at Kansai International High School. MUN (Model United Nations) is an educational program in which students take on the roles of ambassadors representing different countries and engage in debates and negotiations on international issues in English. By considering issues from the perspective of their assigned countries rather than their own, students develop a broader, more nuanced understanding of global affairs while strengthening their logical communication skills in English and their ability to negotiate and build consensus through practical, hands-on learning.
Today marked the first day of the conference. Students worked in bloc groups—groups of countries with similar positions—to revise, refine, and merge draft resolution clauses. Through persistent dialogue and negotiation with delegates representing countries holding different viewpoints, they collaborated to produce a single consensus document. This process of working toward agreement is one of the defining and most valuable learning experiences of MUN.
Tomorrow, the delegates will move to a new venue, where they are scheduled to take part in the General Assembly, a plenary session attended by representatives of all participating countries.
