Associate Professor Huseyin Rasit has been awarded the 2023 Marvin B. Sussman Dissertation Prize
Associate Professor Huseyin Rasit has been awarded the 2023 Marvin B. Sussman Dissertation Prize by the Department of Sociology at Yale University. In his dissertation, Rasit focuses on the state-building projects in Kurdistan-Syria, Kurdistan-Iraq, and the Islamic State in the 21st-Century Middle East and asks why we see such widely different political formations emerging in close proximity. He shows that the political systems emerging in these regions and differences between them are greatly shaped by the ideological projects of those in power rather than geopolitical pressures or military conditions.
The Marvin B. Sussman Dissertation Prize is an endowment created in 1993 by Marvin B. Sussman (Ph.D., 1951, Yale). The prize has been offered annually since 1994, and is awarded to the graduate student whose dissertation, completed within the previous two academic years, is judged to be the most outstanding.
