Courses Taught

Civilizations in Global History is a core course of the Civilization Studies in the GLA curriculum to help students develop their understanding on both the diversity and the common ground of a multi-civilizational global society. You will study a big picture of history of civilizations without a global international society from the ancient times to the 15th century, an unstable coexistence of the emerging West-centric world and 'regional' civilizations still survived from the 16th century to the 18th century, and a historical impact of Western civilization sweeping across the globe since the 19th century. In short, the course examines the global history of the connection and comparison among civilizations, through which you are able to have a long-term historical perspective to contextualize current agendas of the world.

Research Interests

Professor Ichiro Maekawa is the author of a monograph entitled, British Empire and South Africa (Kyoto: Minerva Publishing, 2006) and joint author of more than ten books (including forthcoming volumes) on the history of colonialism and imperialism. He published two translated books on history from English to Japanese. He has published more than thirty articles, book reviews and other academic writings on history. He has also given papers on many occasions and has had several speaking engagements. In March 2011, Professor Maekawa was invited for the "Epstein Memorial Lecture" at the London School of Economics and Political Science and delivered a lecture on "British Aid and Decolonization". Supervision Information

My area of interest is world History: in particular - imperialism, colonialism, decolonisation, historical revisionism on war and colonialism. I have supervised various topics of undergraduate/postgraduate thesis projects relating to my specialty.

Teaching History

I have been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses on history since 2002. From 2002 to 2005 I was the JSPS's Research Fellow at the University of Tokyo. From 2004 to 2011 I became a Research Fellow of the Institute of Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. From 2006 to 2011 I have taught in the Department of Humanities as Associate Professor at Soka University. From 2011 to 2012 I have a Visiting Fellow, Department of Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 2012, I became a full Professor in International History at Soka University. I was the Vice Dean of the Faculty of International Liberal Arts at Soka University from 2014 to 2016.
