Mechanical Engineering / Development of advanced motor by numerical and experimental approach
The motor market continues to expand toward the realization of a carbon-neutral society, including electric vehicles and aircraft. The structure of the motor is an important factor that determines its performance. The Advanced Motor System Laboratory proposed new motor structures utilizing next-generation motor design methods based on numerical optimization and Artificial Intelligence. In addition to designning, we also conduct experiments using a prototype motor and load test equipment. This photograph shows an example of an original motor made by our laboratory and an experimental system for measuring motor performance. Because motors are device that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy through magnetic energy, knowledge of mechanical engineering, electric power engineering, and electromagnetic is important. In addition, because it is rotating machine that generates heat, knowledge of thermo-fluid mechanics and material mechanics is required, making this an application that requires wide range knowledge. With advice from supervisors, students work daily to acquire this knowledge and improve their motor performance.
