In this field, you can be the first to discover or create compounds that no one has seen before, and what’s more, these can help people. To think that I might be able to do this was very exciting. Of course, this is not just limited to compounds; the same applies to data and methods. This curiosity is the basic reason why I became a researcher.
Molecular design of bioactive substances using natural products as lead compounds
I conduct research to enhance the bioactivity of compounds derived from natural sources by chemically transforming those compounds.
About 60% of the low molecular weight medications on the market are naturally derived, or they are compounds developed based on the structure of natural compounds. This alone demonstrates the potential that natural products have of becoming medications, and if you chemically transform these natural products, you can significantly expand upon this potential. With this in mind, my intention is to create new, beneficial compounds.
Message to the Students
I understand you all have different careers in mind, but I believe the ability to think about things is essential no matter what field or profession you end up in. Through your classes, practicums, and research, I hope you will develop the habit of thinking about things and learn to cherish this skill. More importantly, you must not forget to have fun while you learn. While you are students, I want you to experience many things and lead fulfilling lives on campus. By doing this, I hope you will find what it is that interests you.
