Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (4-year Program)

Cultivate researchers who lead to the discovery and development of new drugs

The mission of the pharmaceutical sciences is to contribute to human health and welfare and to the growth and prosperity of society through the development and correct use of new drugs. At a time of remarkable progress in medical technologies, such as targeted therapies, genome-based drug discoveries, and regenerative medicine, research into the area of new drug development has taken on increasing importance, as have the people who support such research. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences will cultivate professionals who will acquire knowledge and skills in the natural sciences and pharmaceutical sciences that are related to human health, centering on pharmaceuticals. They will engage in the discovery, development, and production of new drugs, as well as in research, administration, and education in a variety of pharmaceutical-related domains, such as food, cosmetics, environment, and sanitation.

Courses

Basic Subjects

Students will study the basics of pharmaceutical sciences with a foundation in physics, chemistry, and biology, to develop the scientific thinking processes that are necessary to study specialized subjects.

Introduction to Drug Discovery Research

Students will study the process by which pharmaceuticals are created, from basic research, pre-clinical research, and clinical research, through to their launch onto the market. They will also gain an understanding of the processes that form the foundations of the new drug creation, including the exploration of biologically active substances, molecular design, organic synthesis, and drug design.

Practice in Medicinal Chemistry

Students will develop a deep understanding of the structure of organic compounds that are the raw materials for synthesis and products, and their physical and chemical properties. They will then conduct several of the synthesis reactions that are important for drug synthesis to master the operational procedures and principles of synthetic organic chemistry.

Graduates of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences are actively involved as researchers and developers at pharmaceutical manufacturers. There is also high demand among manufacturers of chemicals, food products, and cosmetics, trading firms, and administrative agencies, making the potential career paths open to graduates many and varied.
* Students in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences are not eligible to sit the National Examination for Pharmacists.
