Why I Became a Researcher

When I was in graduate school, I was conducting exploratory research on new compounds, but the discovery of a certain compound caused me to aspire to become a researcher. The compound I predicted had an unstable structure, and its existence was hard to imagine. Instead of denying me, a former professor of mine gave me the following advice: “If you believe in it, please gather more data to prove it.” I can’t forget the joy and excitement that I felt when I proved the structure of the compound through repeated studies with the support of those words. It was in that moment that I found something new and came to know the joy of presenting that new thing to the world. I would like to play a part in pharmaceutical research with a spirit and sense of joy for discovering new things.

Research Information

Research Area and Theme

Investigating structure-activity relationships by collecting and analyzing data to predict the efficacy and safety of pharmaceutical products and other candidate substances

I will collect and analyze information from research papers and databases, and examine the structure-activity relationships in various functionalities such as the structure and efficacy of pharmaceutical products. In addition, I will make a proposal on the prediction of the efficacy and safety of drug candidate substances and structure optimization by using machine learning on previously obtained data.

Thoughts on Research Theme

In the world of drug discovery research, a vast amount of all kinds of data is reported every day. By collecting these data from the standpoint of a third party and conducting comprehensive analysis, I hope to clarify phenomena that have never before been seen in isolation. Currently, it is said the probability that a candidate substance will eventually become a pharmaceutical product is 1 in 25,000. I would like to contribute to drug discovery research from the viewpoint of regulatory science to increase the potential of a candidate compound reaching the pharmaceutical product stage, and so that approved pharmaceutical products can be used safely for a long time.

Message to Students

小川 慶子 学生へのメッセージ 小川 慶子 学生へのメッセージ

Have fun, take on a variety of things, talk with all kinds of people, think about various things, and nurture “a mind that applies science to everyday life”

I think that the biggest attraction of research is that you can discover “a world first.” Something that is seen as a mistake or an outrageous idea for one person may be a new insight or a groundbreaking idea for someone else. I believe that new discoveries are born from such a difference in thinking. So, when you students come across something that you find to be puzzling, try to think about it a little in your own way and try talking to others. Even if you don’t find an answer right away, this process will nurture your ability to think. This is not limited to research and study, but also applies to everyday life as well. I believe that “the ability to think” enriches your life. Have fun, take on a variety of things, talk with all kinds of people, think about various things, and nurture “a mind that applies science to everyday life.”
