The 30th AJI Frontier Seminar on the “Adapting to Rapid Global Changes: Redefining Agricultural Commodities through Specialty Product Approach”

On April 23, 2021, the 30th AJI Research Frontier Seminar took place online. This time, Dr. Fitrio Ashardiono (Assistant Professor of the College of Policy Science in Ritsumeikan University) made his research presentation, titled “Adapting to Rapid Global Changes: Redefining Agricultural Commodities through Specialty Product Approach”. In his presentation, first, he reported on the present situations of local agricultural producers under threat from the combined effects of climate change and COVID-19. The latter has exacerbated the economic situation of the market for agricultural producers. Second, he persuasively argued the importance of employing sophisticated Bioclimatic Indexes to evaluate how agricultural production can be adapted to the conditions of local ecosystems through introducing various case studies. Following his presentation, participants discussed issues such as how we can construct a way to connect local and small agricultural producers with consumers under a contemporary economic system, and considered the prospects for the further application of his research on local agricultural ecosystems.
