Episode

The eight competencies developed at Ritsumeikan Academy.
We introduce how they are developed through daily experiences, along with diverse episodes.

*These episodes are based on responses actually submitted by students at every level of education—including elementary, junior high, and high school students, as well as university and graduate students—in the Quantitative Survey for Ritsumeikan Academy Competency Framework conducted in the 2024 academic year. Information that could identify individuals has been removed or modified before publication.

When I was studying for my final exams, I set specific goals on what to study that day and how much. Every night I reflected on how I did, and set improved plans for the next day to study more efficiently.

Initiative

I have always been scared to step out of my comfort zone, but words and advice has led me to gain confidence and to try new things.

Innovation

Before coming to Rits, I have always been in a small school with only a few number of students. I was always with the same people, and have never really experienced change. However, right after coming to Rits, I have met a lot of new people with different backgrounds, experiences, and feelings. I learned that each person has their own background, so we shouldn't assume things, and we should be careful with how we interact with them.

Empathy

During my studying abroad, I had much time to think about who am I. And it made me analyze myself.

Self-efficacy

Since I am currently studying in the IB course, I get a lot of assignments, and oftentimes, it is difficult to balance out my studies with the other activities that I do outside of school. However, after experimenting with different studying methods, I began to be better at balancing out my work. I also learned to give up on some things to make time for the other things that I need to prioritize.

Multitasking

Through classes I was able to deepen my understanding of things more this year.

Understanding

As group work activities increased after entering high school, I was able to enhance my teamwork skills, and improve my collaborative skills with others.

Teamwork

I have been in an all-English-speaking environment for only 3 years. However, many of my classmates have spoken English for almost their entire life. Because of this, when I first started the IB program at the Ritsumeikan Uji, I felt like I was failing every class. However, after getting used to this new environment, and getting the support from my teachers, I slowly began to build confidence in some of my classes.

Resilience

Through lectures and courses offered by the university, I have learned new things that I found very interesting and view as a great addition to my previous studies in my home country, especially about the interdisciplinary approach to policy-making, Japanese knowledge on disaster management and urban planning. As a result, I am able to adapt the knowledge to my research and studies.
