The eight competencies developed at Ritsumeikan Academy.
We introduce how they are developed through daily experiences, along with diverse episodes.
*These episodes are based on responses actually submitted by students at every level of education—including elementary, junior high, and high school students, as well as university and graduate students—in the Quantitative Survey for Ritsumeikan Academy Competency Framework conducted in the 2024 academic year. I always discuss with my professor and cohorts.
Multitasking
How to deal with Japanese culture, including the way of learning method, especially communicating with the supervisor.
Resilience
I do not want to share the specific situation or occasion, but I want to express that the support and belief I received from my professor, assistant professor, and one of the administrative staff were truly invaluable. Thanks to their encouragement, I have recovered from my frustration and can believe in myself again.
Self-efficacy
I am currently pursuing my PhD, and throughout my research, I have faced numerous challenges, including many failed experiments. Living abroad and dealing with the pressures of research, along with concerns about the future, has often left me feeling frustrated. During these difficult times, I have been fortunate to have the unwavering support of my professor, assistant professor, and administrative staff. Their encouraging words and moral support have been invaluable, helping me navigate my research and motivating me to achieve my goals, making life in Japan much easier.

When: During my second year at university, in the fall semester of 2021. Where: At my university campus, specifically while working on a group project for an entrepreneurship class. Who: I was part of a team of five classmates, none of whom I had worked with before. The group included students from different disciplines, which made our approaches and perspectives quite diverse. What: Our task was to design a business plan and present a fully developed proposal to a panel of professors and local entrepreneurs. The project was critical, as it accounted for 40% of our final grade. How: When we first started, our group faced significant challenges in coordination. People were hesitant to share ideas, there was no clear division of tasks, and deadlines were slipping. Recognizing the need for organization, I stepped up, suggesting a plan to get us back on track.
Multitasking
When I first had a report reviewed by a professor in pbl in first year, he said I needed to try hard more. However, I already gave my best and I lost hope. Then, I realized that I was studying the wrong way so I changed the way I do things.
Self-efficacy
I had many ups and downs in my academic life, with each feedback from the teachers giving me more understanding of myself through my writing or my speech, the way I communicate and form ideas, the flow of my thoughts, and understanding all of this made me more resilient in facing failures as I view them as opportunities to grow.
Resilience
I learned how to innovate and learn how to be empathetic because I am taking all of my classes through an international perspective rather than an American one. My classes are being taught by professors from all over the world, and I'm having conversations with people about different issues and events while hearing so many different perspectives.
Empathy
In this case, currently in my second semester, I have gotten an oppurtunity to work in a dedicated manner on this semester's Project Based Learning(PBL) in addition to working on a research along with one of my professors. This has given me a chance to improve my Intiative skill, Self-efficacy, Teamworking skills and my Understanding capability. So far, due to Ritsumeikan facilities and accessibility, I have been able to work on the projects in a consistant manner.
