Episode

The eight competencies developed at Ritsumeikan Academy.
We introduce how they are developed through daily experiences, along with diverse episodes.

*These episodes are based on responses actually submitted by students at every level of education—including elementary, junior high, and high school students, as well as university and graduate students—in the Quantitative Survey for Ritsumeikan Academy Competency Framework conducted in the 2024 academic year. Information that could identify individuals has been removed or modified before publication.

When: During my second year at university, in the fall semester of 2021. Where: At my university campus, specifically while working on a group project for an entrepreneurship class. Who: I was part of a team of five classmates, none of whom I had worked with before. The group included students from different disciplines, which made our approaches and perspectives quite diverse. What: Our task was to design a business plan and present a fully developed proposal to a panel of professors and local entrepreneurs. The project was critical, as it accounted for 40% of our final grade. How: When we first started, our group faced significant challenges in coordination. People were hesitant to share ideas, there was no clear division of tasks, and deadlines were slipping. Recognizing the need for organization, I stepped up, suggesting a plan to get us back on track.

Multitasking

It is a trait i have acquired from my home. I know and understand with effort, results show themselves. So, there is no need to doubt myself.

Self-efficacy

I developed my teamwork skills during a project in Thailand in my second year (2023) as part of the CRPS program. This project required our team to immerse ourselves in a local community, identify pressing issues, and devise solutions. At the start, choosing a focus was challenging because each team member had different ideas. To address this, we held regular meetings to reach a consensus on a direction we all supported. The challenges intensified once we arrived in Thailand, specifically in the Klong Toey slum, where we conducted our survey. Collaborating effectively was essential for gathering and analyzing data, as well as presenting our findings. Though disagreements arose frequently, our shared commitment to helping the community kept us on track. Together, we proposed a solution to help the community address fire safety issues. This experience highlighted how essential teamwork is in achieving meaningful impact.

Teamwork

When: During my internship in the summer of 2022. Where: At a marketing firm located in the business district of my city. Who: I worked closely with a team of five interns and reported directly to a senior marketing manager. Additionally, we collaborated with clients to gather insights and feedback for campaign development. What: Our primary task was to develop a promotional campaign for a small business client launching a new product. The success of the campaign relied heavily on understanding the client’s needs and translating those into a clear and compelling marketing strategy.

Teamwork

I’ve had times where I was in a big trouble and I had no one else to turn to but my close friends. They helped me understand that we humans are social creatures and require each other to work towards life. Without friends and teamwork, there wouldnt be the successful human civilisation we have now.

Teamwork

I had lost a lot of precious people and things in my entire life that made me realise I must keep going through and push through all my failures no matter how vast.

Resilience

When I failed a mid term exam, I try to learn from my mistakes and do better in the second half of the lecture.

Empathy

When there is a lot of homework to be done, it is more important to focus on completion than perfection.

Multitasking

Since I'm an international student, I'm basically living alone in Japan with no family or relatives. The first 6 months after coming to Japan, I went through the adjustment phases which was challenging and sometimes exhausting both physically and mentally. I started to understand that self-assurance by understanding yourself is a very important part in facing problems in life. My interest in psychology basically helped me in reaching self-efficacy.
