- What is the“ Ritsumeikan Learning Model”?
At Ritsumeikan University, we are working to enhance undergraduate education using the “Ritsumeikan Learning Model,” which systematizes learner-centered learning styles. This model aims to enable students to achieve or experience the following in their student life.
- 1. To develop an attitude of engaging earnestly in academic pursuits, learning independently and actively based on their own motivation, and with a free spirit and an inquisitive mind that is not bound by established ideas.
- 2. To make the most of various opportunities for advanced learning, including learning in a local region or at a company, or studying abroad at a university, while focusing on general education learning, language learning, and specialized learning.
- 3. To participate in the educational process through mutual learning (peer learning) and mutual support (peer support) to form a learning community.
- 4. To foster a rich sense of humanity and develop social skills through participation, individually or through organizations, in a variety of extracurricular activities involving academia, culture, literary, sports, community contribution, and international exchange.
- 5. To achieve mutual understanding of the differences in beliefs, preferences, and cultural backgrounds, and maintain a spirit of mutual respect for individuality and human rights in both regular classes and extracurricular activities.
The university also creates conditions for students to grow as independent learners and has systems in place to support students facing any difficulties in their studies or student life.
The figure on the next page is an illustration of the characteristics of the “Ritsumeikan Learning Model” described above. The wooden steps that extend from the bottom to the top of the page represent the learning path, and the signboards placed along the way show the main elements. In addition, the branching paths of the wooden steps indicate that there is more than one learning path, and there are many ways to go depending on the choices individual students make and the challenges they face. The elements posted on the signboards are briefly explained on the following pages. Each page includes links to university webpages that provide more detailed information that we encourage you to read.
Each college identifies the knowledge, abilities, and attitudes, etc., that students should acquire through their studies in the college and stipulates them as a number of educational aims. By following the curriculum and meeting the requirements set by each college, students will be considered to have achieved their educational aims and awarded a bachelor’s degree. Each college also defines the ideal types of individuals that students should eventually develop into through activities in society post-graduation and further learning, based on the skills cultivated at the college, as its human resource development aims. Check the links below and confirm your college’s educational aims and aims of human resource development.
