As a Basis for University Learning, and as Knowledge for Global Coexistence and Collaboration

Learning a foreign language is a fundamental part of studying at university. It is also important knowledge for coexisting and collaborating better with people from different cultural backgrounds. Ritsumeikan University supports the acquisition of foreign languages through both regular classes and extracurricular activities. In regular classes, we offer language classes in English and five other foreign languages: German, French, Chinese, Spanish, and Korean (though languages offered differ depending on the college and major, and there are also colleges where you can learn other languages). Students consolidate the basics with compulsory subjects to be taken in their lower years, then from second year onwards they can take courses and programs to acquire advanced proficiency. In addition, by taking the English proficiency tests (group tests) that are regularly held on campus, they can find out their current proficiency level and set future learning goals.

Outside of regular classes, we offer opportunities to learn foreign languages for your own purposes. A Beyond Borders Plaza (BBP) has been established on each campus for the purpose of self-directed foreign language learning and international exchange. In addition, the Center for Language Acquisition (CLA) offers courses to prepare students for the TOEIC L&R, TOEFL, and IELTS language proficiency tests that provide students with scores for study abroad, going on to higher education, and finding employment. At the BBP and in CLA courses, you might just make friends who aim to create a world together beyond your college and year-level affiliation.

You are encouraged to consider the foreign language skills you want to acquire by the time you graduate, set specific goals, and proceed with your studies systematically.
