Finding a Path to Follow After Graduation as a Member of a Workplace, Family and Local Community

What image does the word “career” bring to mind? Some people might imagine their job proficiency and professional status, while others may feel that even if someone mentions the word “career” to them after having just started university, “job hunting” is still a long way off and the idea of it is not yet clear.

The word “career” is derived from the Latin word for “chariot/ vehicle with wheels” and the track left by the wheels. From its association with this “track,” it eventually came to be used as a word to indicate professional knowledge and life course. It’s easy to think of your career as only your professional background, but in career psychology, the word is taken to a have a broader meaning. In this understanding, people do not live only as professionals; they also take on a variety of roles as family members and members of the local community. A career is every path you have taken and every path you will choose to take from here.

At Ritsumeikan University, we offer opportunities for you to “find your own path (i.e., think about your career)” from your first year. In addition, we have a well-developed system in place to help you and other students realize the various career visions that you have explored and selected. You can feel secure while looking for your own individual path.
