At the university, you will acquire specialized knowledge by taking many subjects. The culmination of that study is “graduation research” (for a graduation thesis or graduation project). Unlike learning in which you tackle a given task, graduation research requires you to set a research theme based on your own awareness of the problem and take the initiative to resolve it. Under the guidance of the instructor, you will look for a resolution to the problem while discussing with your colleagues, and finish the graduation thesis or project on your own. Graduation research efforts will be a very important experience in playing an active role in society.
The starting times and course names of graduation research vary depending on the college. Check the course names in the Curriculum Chart of the Academic Handbook for your college, and check the details in the syllabus. Graduation research is a subject for upperclassmen, but it is also a place where you can demonstrate systematic learning at Ritsumeikan. It is important to take courses from your first year with an eye on your graduation research.

Going to graduate school is an important career option after graduating from university. Graduate school education at Ritsumeikan University has developed significantly since its inception in 1950, and now has 15 graduate schools affiliated with 15 colleges, and 6 independent graduate schools that are not based in a particular college. There are two types of degrees that can be obtained at graduate school: a master's degree and a doctoral degree. The basic period for obtaining a master’s degree is 2 years and a doctoral degree may be obtained in 3 years if you already have a master’s degree, or in 5 years if you have only graduated from an undergraduate program. (Please note that the standard required length of study for obtaining a degree depends on the graduate school.) At the graduate school, you will acquire the ability to discover and solve problems, create new things, or disseminate research results through specialized research activities based on what you have learned as an undergraduate. Going to graduate school has the potential to significantly change your career.
