Ritsumeikan University Karate Club (Shinsei) Member Kenji Mori Wins Bronze Medals at the World Deaf Karate Championships 2024
The World Deaf Karate Championships 2024, an international competition for deaf karate athletes, was held in Johor, Malaysia, from Sunday, December 15 to Friday, December 20, 2024. Ritsumeikan University Karate Club (Shinsei) member Kenji Mori (2nd year, College of Social Sciences) competed in the championships, taking home bronze medals in both the men's individual kata and karate kumite (under 60 kg) divisions.
This tournament is held every four years in the year before the Deaflympics to promote international friendship and understanding through competitive karate and to provide a venue for athletes with hearing disabilities to compete. Forty-one athletes (28 men and 13 women) from nine countries competed in the 2024 event.
In the men's individual kata division, the judges evaluated Mori on various aspects, including accuracy, power, and speed. In the men’s karate kumite division, Mori scored points mainly with his right-leg middle level kicks, using his signature speed to his advantage. Here is hoping that the experience that Mori gained in these games will help him compete and win medals in the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics to be held in November.
Comment from Kenji Mori (2nd year, College of Social Sciences)
I would like to thank everyone for all their support. Thanks to you, I was able to win bronze medals in both the kata and karate divisions. At this year's championships, I was reminded of how hard it is to give your all in any environment, but at the same time I was able to clearly identify my own issues and learn a great deal from the experience. My next goal is to win a gold medal at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics, the biggest stage for deaf athletes from around the world, which will be held in Tokyo in November 2025. I am grateful for both my friends and my environment, and will practice every day. I look forward to your continued support.
