The 12th IEEE CPMT Symposium Japan (ICSJ2023) was held at Suzaku Campus from Wednesday, November 15 to Friday, November 17.

IEEE CPMT Symposium Japan is an international conference hosted by the U.S.-based Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the IEEE Electronics Packaging Society (EPS) . EPS is one of 38 technical societies within the IEEE, which is one of the world's largest organizations in the electrical, electronic, and information technology fields, and this conference is held to foster exchange among world-class researchers and corporate engineers in the field of semiconductor packaging technology.

In addition to Research Organization of Science and Technology Professor and RARA Fellow Kentaro Kaneko serving as the chair of the organizing committee for the IEEE CPMT Symposium Japan, the decision was reached to hold an international conference on semiconductor research at Ritsumeikan's head campus given its significance and potential for synergy, as well as the university’ expectations for the rapid expansion and reinvigoration of the semiconductor research field.

Prior to the symposium, President Yoshio Nakatani welcomed and met with EPS President Kitty Pearsall and other society officials. At the symposium, President Nakatani served as guest speaker and gave the opening remarks. Over the three-day period, the participants exchanged information on cutting-edge semiconductor packaging technology and interacted with each other.

Professor Kaneko is a leading core researcher at Ritsumeikan University, which aims to realize next-generation research , and a RARA Fellow . He is engaged in both pioneering and basic research on germanium dioxide (GeO2), a new power semiconductor material, and its practical application for energy conservation. In December 2022, he launched Patentix Inc., a deep tech venture company that aims to develop practical applications for GeO2. In September 2023, Patentix received the NEDO Award at U-START UP KANSAI Open Pitch , a program to support the establishment of university-based startups, and was selected by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to receive preferential treatment under its startup support scheme. In this way, Professor Kaneko is active in a wide range of research activities from trailblazing basic research to the promotion of practical applications.
