18th AJI Research Frontline Seminar on "The Role of Zakat Funds in Increasing Human Capital: Sustaining Islamic Education in Malaysia"

The 18th AJI Research Frontline Seminar was held on June 16, 2020 through online, and Dr. Mohd. Farihal Bin Osman (visiting scholar at the Graduate School of Management, Kyoto University / from the School of Islamic Business Management, College of Business, University Utara Malaysia) gave an interesting presentation entitled "The Role of Zakat Funds in Increasing Human Capital: Sustaining Islamic Education in Malaysia". Dr. Farihal began by explaining the categories of needy supported by traditional Zakat and stressed Islam’s emphasis on education. Then he presented the current situation in the economically developed state of Kedah, Malaysia, and proposed a Zakat education plan for the needy, educating them up to higher levels, raising their skills, lifting them out of poverty, and consequently increasing the state’s expert resources.

His enthusiastic presentation stimulated a lively exchange among the specialists from the floor on the potential uses of zakat funds for the wellbeing of society, and the importance of adopting a universal approach to Zakat under the guidance of accepted Islamic scholars.
