3rd AJI Frontier Seminar held on "The New Face of Waqf in Contemporary Muslim Society: How Islamic Economics is Benefiting Social Welfare in Malaysia"

The 3rd AJI Frontier Seminar was held on May 21, 2019. Dr. Izzati Norzilan (Specially Appointed Researcher, Kyoto University) gave an enthusiastic report on recent developments in the Islamic economy in Malaysia, entitled "The New Face of Waqf in Contemporary Muslim Society: How Islamic Economics is Benefiting Social Welfare in Malaysia".

The Waqf system is one of Islam's traditional economic and social institutions and has historically played a role in providing public amenities such as mosques and schools. Dr. Izzati discussed how Malaysia has been paying attention to the legislative and administrative fields of waqf and has paved the way for them to be developed to make a distinctive contribution in the society. Using three cases from her fieldwork, she showed how trends in waqf revitalization in Malaysia aim to develop a self-sustaining model for waqf that could generate and utilize waqf income for social welfare development. After her presentation there was an enthusiastic Q&A session on Waqf, its status in the Malaysian economy, and its prospects.
