【Report】The 16th AJI Book Launch was held! Dr. JIN Chunyu’s Chinese and Japanese Poetry and Ci: A Study of the “Yan Xi Ci” and the Reception of Chinese Ci Poetries by the Japanese

On Wednesday, July 19, the AJI Book Launch was held. This time, we picked up Dr. JIN Chunyu’s (Senior Researcher, Ritsumeikan Asia-Japan Research Organization, Ritsumeikan University) book Chinese and Japanese Poetry and Ci: A Study of the “Yan Xi Ci” and the Reception of Chinese Ci Poetries by the Japanese published in March 2023 from Hōyūshoten.

This book examines the significance of Ci poetry in the development of literature. For this purpose, Dr. Jin conducted in-depth research on bibliographic information, the circulation process of printed books, and the status of collections of Ci poetries in Japan and China. Based on the encompassing scrutinization, her book synthesizes all the information and ascertains the historical significance of the Ci poetry collection in the process of accepting them in Japan. Notably, this book uses well-reserved books remaining in Japan and China to examine these texts and explore their original form by adding philological considerations. The book also has a prominent feature that aims to elucidate the unique cultural phenomenon of cultural acceptance and creation using Chinese characters. This is done by tracing the concrete tracks of the circulation of Chinese classics in Japan, China, and Korea.

Dr. Jin shared her research experiences during the book launch event. She discussed her work in various libraries and archives in mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea and shared photos. In the Q&A session, there were comments and questions about the specific methods used to study classical literature, how Ci works have been passed down historically, and their rhythm, verse, and rules of expression.
