Dr. Mikio Nishizawa (member of Steering Committee of AJI) gave an invited talk at the International Conference, 1st ICJAM/15th ICGRC

An International Conference was held in Malang, East Java, Indonesia in September 10–11. The 1st International Conference on Jamu and Alternative Medicine (ICJAM) in conjunction with the 15th International Conference on Global Resource Conservation (ICGRC) “Harmony in Nature and Health: Bioprospecting in Practices and Regulatory.” Malang is a university city 600 m above sea level. Near this city, there are Mount Bromo (a famous caldera volcano) and Mount Semeru (the highest mountain on the island of Java). This area is designated as a national park and used for a poster of this Conference.

Professor Dr. Mikio Nishizawa was invited as a keynote speaker and have a talk on “Studies on Traditional Japanese Medicine, Kampo Medicine.” He introduced the recent findings about the crude drugs of Kampo medicine, such as Atractylodes chinensis rhizomes (Sojutsu) and Polygonum multiflorum roots (Kashu), which are effective on kidney diseases and renal anemia. These studies are applicable to the research on traditional Indonesian medicine (Jamu).

This Conference was organized by Dr. Dinia R. Dwijayanti (Lecturer, Research Center of Complementary Medicine and Functional Food, Brawijaya University), who received Ph.D. degree by Graduate School of Life Sciences, Ritsumeikan University. This International Conference will develop research on medicinal plants and provide a basis for its application to drugs and functional foods.
