【Report】 The Book Launch of Dr. Aoi MOCHIZUKI new publication, Refugee Resettlement as a Global Issue was held!

The AJI Book Launch was held online on June 22, co-hosted by the Ritsumeikan Asia-Japan Research Institute (AJI) and the Ritsumeikan Center for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (CMEIS). This time, Dr. Aoi Mochizuki, a fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), introduced her book, Refugee Resettlement as a Global Issue: Thinking from the Foundation of Belonging and Survival of Syrian Refugees in Foreign Countries (written in Japanese), published in March 2023. Dr. Mochizuki specializes in area studies and refugee studies, especially focusing on Syrian refugees. This book describes the results of her fieldwork conducted in the Middle East and Europe. During the Book Launch, Dr. Mochizuki presented an aspect of the field investigation that was not covered in the book. Furthermore, she elaborated on the reason behind selecting "belonging" as the central theme of the book, drawing from her personal background. This book analyzes how Syrian refugees live, survive, and belong in the Middle East and Europe, using various materials and ambitious field research. In addition, during her presentation, she shared colored versions of the black and white photos printed in her book as well as unpublished photos taken during her field research. The Q&A session was intellectually stimulating, with a thought-provoking discussion on the technical approaches to asking questions when conducting field research and the potential for her future research on refugees. At this Book launch, all participants could share a precious time.
